Spain Travel Guide: Cities, Islands and Coastal Holidays
Spain is not one single kind of holiday. A city break in Madrid, a few days in Barcelona, a coastal stay in Andalusia and an island week in the Canaries all need different plans. Choose the region that fits your interests first, then compare flights, transport and accommodation around it.
Where to go in Spain
Barcelona
Barcelona suits travellers interested in architecture, galleries, food, neighbourhoods and the coast. Decide which major sights matter to you and check official ticket information and opening times. Staying near a useful transport connection can make it easier to move around. If you are visiting during a busy period, plan the main attractions early and leave free time for wandering.
Madrid
Madrid works well for museums, parks, markets, food and a lively city break. It can also be a base for a day trip if your schedule allows. Choose accommodation based on the neighbourhoods you want to visit and the transport links you expect to use. In warmer months, plan outdoor sightseeing for comfortable parts of the day and check event schedules before you travel.
Andalusia
Andalusia offers several different city experiences. Seville, Granada and Córdoba each have their own historic sites and atmosphere, and the journey between them takes planning. If you want to include more than one city, check travel times and ticket rules before you book your accommodation. In warmer seasons, consider a slower schedule, shade breaks and advance plans for major attractions.
The Balearic Islands
Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza suit different types of trip, and each island has more than one kind of base. Research local transport and beach access before choosing an accommodation area. If you want to visit more than one town, compare bus routes, car hire and taxi options for your dates. Do not assume a resort is close to every attraction you have in mind.
The Canary Islands
Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura have varied landscapes and accommodation choices. Decide whether you want a resort base, outdoor activities, beaches or a mix. Conditions can differ between the coast and higher ground, so check local guidance if you plan a walk or excursion. For a short trip, it may be easier to concentrate on one island rather than trying to combine several.
The Costa del Sol and Málaga
The Costa del Sol can work for a beach-focused break, a city-and-coast combination or a longer stay with day trips. Compare the city of Málaga with other coastal bases according to the pace and facilities you want. Read our Málaga destination review for a more focused look.
How long should you spend?
A long weekend usually works best in one city. With a week, pick one region or one island and leave time to enjoy it. A two-week trip can combine two nearby areas, but include travel days when deciding how many nights to spend in each place. Spain is large, and a map can make a route look simpler than it feels when you add airport transfers, check-ins and connections.
A flexible one-week plan
- Days 1–3: explore one city, with a mix of major sights and unplanned time.
- Days 4–5: choose a nearby town, coast or day trip that fits your interests.
- Days 6–7: return to your departure city or add a second base only if the journey is straightforward.
For an island trip, use the same principle but stay on one island unless you have enough time for a second stop. Build the route around travel schedules that are published for your actual dates.
When to visit
Spring and autumn may suit sightseeing in many places, while summer is popular for beaches and holidays. Weather, crowds and local services vary by region and year. The islands and mainland do not have identical conditions. Check the forecast and local advice for the places you plan to visit, and consider how heat may affect walking, outdoor activities and travel with children.
Getting around
High-speed rail links several major mainland cities, while buses and local transport serve other routes. Flights and ferries connect mainland Spain with the islands. Compare total door-to-door time, baggage rules, transfer costs and connection risk instead of choosing only by ticket price.
A car can be helpful for a rural or multi-stop itinerary, but city parking and traffic may make it inconvenient for a city break. Check driver requirements, insurance excess, fuel rules, deposits and cross-border or one-way restrictions with the rental provider. See our car hire advice and airport transfer guide.
Where to stay
Choose a base that reduces the travel you need to do each day. For a city break, compare central areas with neighbourhoods near reliable transport. For a beach trip, check the distance to the beach, shops and restaurants, and whether your accommodation is on a hill or requires a car. Compare the full price, cancellation deadline, taxes, meal plan and check-in arrangements. Our hotel guide gives you a simple comparison checklist.
Planning activities
For popular sights, check whether you need a timed ticket and whether the official venue has accessibility information. Group nearby activities together rather than crossing the city repeatedly. Leave space for meals, rest and changes in weather. If you want to book a tour, read what is included and the cancellation terms before paying.
Before you go
Entry requirements depend on your passport and circumstances. If you are travelling from the UK, check the latest GOV.UK Spain entry requirements and full Spain travel advice. For destination inspiration and regional information, see Spain’s official tourism site. Confirm schedules, opening times and booking terms with the relevant providers close to your travel date.
Example routes by travel style
One-city break: choose Barcelona, Madrid or Seville and spend the first day getting oriented. Plan one or two main sights each day and keep an open block for food, parks or a neighbourhood you discover along the way. This works well when you have only a few nights and do not want to spend the holiday moving between hotels.
Andalusia by rail or road: choose two or three cities that match your interests, check the journey time between them and decide whether rail, bus or a car fits your plans. Book accommodation near the stations or transport you expect to use, but check noise, access and evening travel too. Avoid adding a long final transfer on the same day as an international flight.
Island stay: choose one island and one base unless you have enough time for a second stop. Compare the coast, local transport and the places you want to see before you choose a hotel. If you plan to rent a car, check collection arrangements, parking and the insurance excess before paying.
Make each day manageable
Group nearby sights rather than crossing the city several times. Check whether a museum or attraction requires a timed ticket, and allow time for queues, meals and transport. For outdoor plans, check local conditions and have an indoor alternative. If travelling with children or someone who needs step-free routes, contact venues and accommodation about access details in advance.
Before booking a day trip, check the starting point, total duration, what is included and how much free time you will have. Read the cancellation policy and make sure the return time works with your other plans. For independent visits, check the official venue page rather than relying only on third-party descriptions.
Think about your arrival and departure
Compare the airport with your chosen base, not just the flight time. A cheaper flight can involve a longer transfer or an arrival time with fewer onward options. Check how you will reach your accommodation, whether your arrival is late, and what you will do if a connection is disrupted. Keep buffer time between separate bookings and check the provider’s rules for changes.
If you are splitting a stay between cities or islands, try to place travel days between activity-heavy days. That leaves more room for delays and means you are less likely to miss a prepaid experience if an earlier journey runs late.
